discussing issues in education and technology
  • Leonardo's Laptop Published 2006-06-26

I was reading a summary by Mike Muir of a session from AALF 4i Annual Conference titled Leonardo's Laptop: Educational Tools for Collaboration and Creativity (by Ben Shneiderman). The session description included the following which I found to be very interesting:

The old computing is about what computers can do; the new computing is about what people can do ... and therefore the new education is about collaboration and creativity ... The goal is to have students working in teams to create something of value to someone outside the classroom, and something that endures beyond the semester.

Dr. Shneiderman is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. So I suspect that this statement is mostly directed to the study of computer science. Or is it?

The first part of the session description speaks to me as a educational technologist. I am constantly trying to explain that the technology is not the important factor, it is the innovative methods employed by teachers (perhaps using technology) that is exciting. Blogging is the hot educational topic, but it is how blogging is incorporated into the curriculum - how teachers and students use blogs - that will make the difference.

Furthermore, the last sentence identifies key learning objectives that I and many others have been promoting:

    • Collaboration
    • Creativity
    • Authentic Assessment

These objectives are integral to innovation. Innovation is about taking inputs from a wide range of people and disciplines, looking at these inputs critically and coming up with a creative idea. For true innovation, this idea must then be nurtured and developed into something others can share.

Finally, the idea of extending students' work beyond the classroom and that "endures beyond the semester" is critical to promoting both pride and enthusiasm for learning.

  • Focus on Learning Published 2006-06-23

Tim Stahmer (AssortedStuff) wrote today (link) about a principal who was told of how a district improved student test scores using a wiki. The principal responded with a how-do-I-get-me-one-of-those? I agree with Tim's conclusion :

I have no doubt that this principal has no idea what a wiki is or how one might be used for instruction ... However, this little event could be a positive sign ... we have a few more people in the schools becoming aware of and discussing the use of these new tools

I would extend the discussion to state that we need to remind our principals, superintendents and even teachers that the focus should be on the learning enabled by the tool, rather than the tool itself. Wikis are a fantastic tool for enabling collaboration. So the focus should be on the art of collaboration and how it can be used to foster learning. Making wikis available to your school is fantastic but only after the discussion on how they can be used in your curriculum to improve learning.

  • low-tech digital storytelling Published 2006-06-17

So, you don't have a digital video camera, your computers are too few and too old, or you don't want to spend the time teaching students the technical skills relating to movie making. This does not mean that digital storytelling is not for you. Hope Elementary School in Hope, Maine had an interesting approach to storytelling. Students created posters describing life in 1492. The teacher then photographed them and put the images up on the school's website. Isn't this digital storytelling?

  • Bernajean's Categories Published 2006-06-10

I want to thank Tim Wilson - The Savvy Technologist - for his excellent interviews with Bernajean Porter and Joe Lambert. If you have not listen to them (or any of Tim's podcasts, I recommend it. Podcast Links). Bernajean, in discussing assessment, suggests that the media (sound, images, video, transitions, etc.) should be categorized as (and I paraphrase):

    • detracting from the story
    • supporting the story
    • enhancing the story

I love the simplicity of these categories, the focus on the true product (the story) and its application to all educational technology.
